The Red Letters

The “religion of Edom” and the “grapes of wrath” are a strange and apocalyptic reference from Isaiah. Edom, or the Idumeans, before their forced conversion to Judaism by the Hasmonean dynasty (Herod and his brief line of Kings were Idumeans) were the legendary descendants of Esau, the elder brother of Jacob, and the traditional enemies of Israel as Amalek. Frank's “Religion of Edom” was also associated with the figure in Isaiah stained with blood or the “grapes of wrath.” “Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson?” (Isaiah 63:1). "I have trodden the winepress alone; from the nations no one was with me. I trampled them in my anger and trod them down in my wrath; their blood spattered my garments, and I stained all my clothing.” (Isaiah 63:3) and Revelation 19:13 “He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and His name is The Word of God.” Using a pun on adom (“red”) and Edom, Frank was the supposed author of the “Red Letters.” These were actual communications in red ink sent, sometimes by courier, to Jewish communities in Eastern Europe in 1800 with warnings and instructions for the survival of a coming apocalypse. Government intelligence agencies called them religious shwärmerei, sinister “rhapsodies.” Hundreds of these “Red Letters” were intercepted by the governments of Austria, Prussia and Russia. The “Red Letters” were an attempt by a hidden oligarchy, which included Nathan and Solomon Schorr, known after baptism as Michal and Franciscek Wołowscy, to maintain control over the Frankist Movement, and carry it forward on the back of a mythology of Esau, the elder brother supplanted by Jacob, regaining control of his usurped heritage as patriarch of Judaism, Frank's other writings were published as “Words of the Lord.” or “Words of the Master.”

Before the interception of the “Red Letters” the governments of Europe were shocked by the interception in 1784 of Adam Weishaupt's writings to his “Illuminati” order which had infiltrated Free-Masonry. These were interpreted as seditious and the secret society was banned by the government of Karl Theodor, Elector of Bavaria, in 1784. Weishaupt lost his position at the University of Ingolstadt and fled Bavaria. Not to mention that the French Revolution had everyone on edge.

Red, being the color of blood is the esoteric color par excellence, and was associated with mystical uprisings. In Iran in the eight century there were Manichean Communist revolts known as the Surkhi Alam, or “Red Banners.” “De la Croix, too, mentions Sabbatai's royal costume, specifying that in public he wore a robe made of “white satin.” But these white robes were the usual Sabbath apparel of the Kabbalists, and if the Sabbatians donned them on a Sabbath this not possibly have provoked surprise or comment. According to a very reliable testimony he wore red when receiving delegations in Gallipoli [in the prison of Abydos], and expounded the significance of the color in homilies on Isaiah 63.2 “wherefore art thou in red apparel.” The red color
